I don’t know that there could have been a better time for Réal Cardinal’s first full LP as Comaduster to come out. Its heady brew of influences is incredibly of the moment; in spite of its lengthy gestation, the glitchy, post-rock and dubstep inflected tracks on Hollow Worlds epitomize a forward thinking and considered approach to electronic music. In a landscape that is by nature fractious and prone to genre siloing the secret to its success shouldn’t be hard to divine: despite all the chattering micro-breaks, airy guitars and general digital filligree, it is a record where every sonic decision is made in the service of its songs.
Frigid drone crackles to the anticipation of stuttering robots as “Ma” teases of the electronic treatments that are in store. Dubstep debris shifts into “Winter Eyes” and provides an early offering of vocal range, transitioning from echoing icy longings to eruptions of agonizing screams. Timbre fluctuations are exploited to no end as it strives in accordance to relentless dubstep cues, bringing new life into a sound that is ordinarily drab. “The Send Off” contains electro/industrial influences with metallic blasts and angst-ridden outcries, “Hollow Worlds” elaborates on dense ambient and gusts of drum & bass all before the palate cleansing intermission in “Unfound” tempers the chaos as stark piano touches seep through a static-ridden dimension.
Apart from that, the melody department does its best to immerse you completely within its all-encompassing aura. Clocking in at 11 minutes 'Nightsail' gains momentum pretty fast and maintains it all the way until the order gives way to complete chaos that fades into merciful quiet eventually. 'Hollow Worlds' gets a worthy closing with the already known 'Connecting The Seams'; featured on the 'Accretion' compilation. It never ever erupts while wrapping its melodious fluidity around your heart. IF you were waiting for an electronic album to call album of the year, you should consider this one. It tops everything with a flawless production and not a single track that feels like filler material. Hopefully, the next record won't be taking too long.
